Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who is eligible to apply for FSAP?
    All admitted first-year undergraduate students entering Washington University are eligible.
  2. When are the applications due?
    The application and deposit must ARRIVE no later than Wednesday, May 28th. However, the program fills on a first come first serve basis, so we recommend that you apply early. The program has been full by early May in year's past.
  3. How many students participate in the program?
    About 90
  4. How much does the program cost?
    The total cost of the program is $2,950. This cost includes tuition, housing, meals, and five weeks of social activities, but not books or travel costs to and from campus. Financial Aid is available for students who wish to be considered.
  5. How do I apply for financial aid?
    Simply check the "I wish to be considered for financial assistance" box on the application, and you will automatically be considered. To determine who receives financial aid, we look at the percentage of Washington University tuition you qualify for, and award that same percentage as a grant toward the total cost of the program.
  6. What courses are available for participants to take?
    All participants take Introduction to Reading and Writing about Literature, and choose one of three available courses. You can download a full list of courses here.
  7. How do I know which classes to pick?
    Pick the courses that seem most appealing to you. They all fulfill requirements. Obviously, if you've taken one of these classes before, or think you'll be getting AP credit (ie: for Calc I), then you shouldn't plan to take that course.
  8. Do the courses taken during FSAP fulfill general education requirements?
    YES, all courses taken during FSAP fulfill general education requirements.
  9. What are the dates of FSAP?
    Students arrive on June 14th and leave July 19th.
  10. Can I still participate in the program if I have to arrive late?
    Unfortunately, no - since you're completing semester long courses in 5 weeks, it is essential that you be present for the entire program.
  11. What are the living arrangements for the program? Will I live on campus? Will I live in a traditional or modern dorm?
    All participants will live together on campus in a modern residential house. Students participating in the program are required to live on campus for the entire program.
  12. What do I need to pack?
    Please pack light, but you should include in your packing the following items: (NOTE, this list is sent in an information packet once we receive the application and deposit.)

    • sheets (for long twin mattress or use 2 top sheets), blanket, towels, and pillow
    • personal toiletries and shower shoes
    • casual clothes for hot, humid weather - jeans, shorts, tops, bathing suit, one nice casual outfit, and a sweater
    • umbrella
    • quarters for the washing machines and dryers (soap may be purchased here)
    • alarm clock
    • a calculator, if on the science or calculus track
    • Optional: laptop computer
  13. Are there any restrictions placed on students while participating in the program?
    • Students may not have jobs while they participate in the program.
    • Students may not have cars on campus while they participate in the program
  14. How will I be billed for FSAP?
    The non-refundable $50.00 deposit is due with the application. The remaining cost of the program will be billed to the students account.

Additional Information (this list is also sent in an information packet once the application and deposit are received)

  • Do not bring a car, transportation to events will be provided. There is no parking available for freshmen. You will be asked to have the car removed from campus.
  • Books and supplies will cost about $160. They can be purchased with a personal check, credit card, or cash at the book store.
  • Students can open a bank account at the banking facility on campus with a personal check, travelers check or cash.
  • Storage is not available, so what you bring you will have to take home with you.
  • The athletic facility will be open for your use (the facility includes a swimming pool, track, weight room, basketball, squash, and handball courts, etc.)
  • Since all activities, room, and board are paid for by the program fee, a lot of spending money is not needed.
  • The residence hall you will be staying in is air conditioned.
  • The residence hall room you will be staying in during the summer probably will not be your room in the fall.
  • You will get your mail box number and phone number when you arrive on campus (a phone will be in your room).
  • The roommate you have in the summer program will probably not be your roommate in the Fall.
